Why handmade jewellery is better
It's a question we get asked a lot. "Why does it take you 4 - 6 weeks to make my jewellery?".
And the answer is? Simple: We are not Amazon. (And we say that with no small amount of pride). We hand make all of our jewellery, from the raw materials, from scratch. And that takes a bit of time.
But why do we hand make? Again, it's pretty simple: Because we believe handmade jewellery is far superior to that which is mass produced. It's better for us, better for you, and better for the planet. Here are 6 reasons why:
Profundity. Firstly, we aren't just "making jewellery". For us, it goes far deeper than that. We are bringing part of your story to life, with silver and gold and gemstones, and design features personal to you. Whether that story includes a horse, or a loved one, or is about a milestone in your life, or a celebration, or a big occasion, it is YOUR story. It is unique. And the jewellery representing that story - be it horsehair jewellery or fine jewellery, should be unique too.
Uniqueness and Individuality. Unlike mass produced machine made jewellery, no two pieces of handmade jewellery are the same. Even when the design is the repeated, each item is inherently unique. Hammer patterns and textures, dimensions and small details personal to you, all ensure that your jewellery is truly one of a kind.
Superior quality materials. When jewellery is mass produced, costs and efficiency usually dictate the quality of the materials used. (Think being made cheaply for maximum profit). We are committed to using only the finest quality sterling silver and gold, and high quality gemstones. All of our jewellery is tested and hallmarked by the Birmingham Assay Office, which is our, and your guarantee of quality. You can read all about hallmarking here. Quality, longevity and durability are forefront when we design and make your jewellery.
Tailor made for you. Your jewellery should tell your story, reflect your style and personality, and fit perfectly. And by handmaking it specifically for you, we can ensure that it does all three. You can select your choice of gemstones, add meaningful embellishments, and add engraved names, dates and phrases, all unique to you. And we can make necklaces and bracelets any length, and rings in half sizes, to ensure the perfect fit. And of course, if you're not sure of your size, we can help you determine the best size for you.
Ethical and Sustainable practices. We care about the planet, and are committed to making our jewellery, and our business, as responsible and sustainable as possible. And ethical integrity is at the very heart of everything we do. We only use the finest recycled sterling silver, and recycled gold. We only buy gemstones which have been responsibly sourced, from reputable UK based dealers. Our packaging is sustainable and environmentally aware, and we recycle our outer packaging as many times as possible. We also make sure our working practices are as environmentally friendly as possible, swapping out harsh chemicals for more natural alternatives where we can, and keeping waste to a minimum.
(As a side note, much of the mass produced jewellery imported into the UK has been made in the jewellery equivalent of sweat shops, where workers, and the environment are horribly abused and exploited).
Supporting craftswomen and a small, independent business. And we love you for it.
Our craft, and our customers, mean the absolute world to us, we really do care about you. We do everything we can to ensure you have the perfect piece of jewellery that you will treasure for years to come, and perhaps even pass down through the family. You just don't get that with corporate jewellery businesses and machine made jewellery.
